Libertarian Party of Maryland

Cecil County Board of Education,
5th district:

Dave Sten

Cecil Whig Newspaper article (June 24, 2010)

Biography

Dave Sten I'm a life-long resident of North East, MD and attended public school at North East Elementary, Middle, and High School. I graduated from North East High School in 1988.

In 1993 I graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. This past Winter I graduated from Wilmington University with a Master's Degree in Information Technology and Internet and Website Design. I'm currently working toward my Masters in Business Administration at Wilmington University and plan to graduate in May 2011.

I'm employed as a Programmer Analyst at Herr Foods, Inc. in Nottingham, Pennsylvania where I have worked for the past 15 years. At work I assist our Accounting and Sales departments with production cost analysis, budgeting, inventory control, and electronic data interchange with our trading partners.

I'm a past Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Maryland and currently serve as the Vice Chairman.

I live in the Elk Neck area with my wife Renee and daughters Bailee and Heather. Bailee is a 9th grader at North East High School and Heather is a second grader at North East Elementary School. I'm very proud of their accomplishments in school and also with their extracurricular activities such as dance.

I'm eager to serve on the Board of Education and I'm proud of our education system here in Cecil County. The funding level per child for our students is below the national and state average, but our teachers have made significant accomplishments and our students have managed to score above average on assessment tests. Our teachers are dedicated and instrumental in motivating their students to learn and to achieve.

Funding for our county's education system is going to be challenging, as stimulus money will be phased out and additional restrictive federal and state mandates are on their way. I look forward to working with my fellow board members in coming up with innovative ideas to help stretch our budgeted dollars.

While helping to craft policies, I will consider students rights and the rights of the parents. I believe that parents are concerned for their children's education and generally do what's right. Policies must be flexible to allow for parental control of their children's education.
