September 10, 2025 notes: It's been over twenty years since I started taking animal visitor pictures. The first photos were taken on 35mm film with an old Pentax SLR w/100mm lense, from which I scanned the prints for the website. I'm now on my third digital camera (Nikon Coolpix), which has a 26x optical zoom and records 1080p videos. Photos were never too demanding for the website, but videos definitely were in those dial-up days. For data compression reasons (plus to honor my namesake's company) I put the videos in RealPlayer format... Until that was no longer regularly supported... Then I moved them all to Flash because of its popularity. Which is now deprecated and not handled on most modern devices.

I have finally given in and moved all of the photos and videos to Google Photos. I cannot control the formatting and display there as I can on an actual webpage (like this), so the presentation is actually a step down. However, Google Photos offers two major advantages: First, the pictures are uploaded in the maximum resolution I've captured, but viewers see a smaller view on the page for quick perusal -- but clicking on a photo brings up the higher resolution version. Second, I can upload the videos in any format I choose; Google converts them as needed, and makes them viewable on their webpage on any modern device. You must click on the video to see the entire duration. I have uploaded 191 photographs and 115 videos, comprising 2.8 gigabytes in total.

On the Google Photos pages, of course you can scroll through to see what's there, but if you click (or tap) one picture it will display it in greater detail; then you can either click the right or left arrows that appear if you mouse to that area, or swipe left or right on a mobile device to proceed to the next item. If you click the Info icon it will show the actual filename, too. I'm now labelling the pictures and videos with the date (YYYY-MM-DD) taken.
