Female Northern Cardinal Courting: the male approaches his intended and feeds her seeds to win her heart... ... and the result. Which leads to... ... Juvenile Cardinals. The fledglings have black bills and the coloring of females. Gradually their bills turn orange and the males get red plumage. White-breasted Nuthatch. They tend to walk down tree trunks looking for insects that the other birds missed while walking up the tree. Red-breasted Nuthatch: smaller than their more numerous White-breasted cousins Dark-eyed Juncos. They summer in northern Canada, but spend their winters here (they always remind me of snow). Tufted Titmouse Carolina Chickadee This guy (above) took refuge on my windowsill on a dreary Baltimore rainy day House Finches (male is red). They often dominate the feeder, as they can break the sunflower seed shells with their beaks and don't have to laboriously carry them one at a time to a branch to crack by pounding (like the chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and downies do). So they sit on the perches and leisurely snack. Male Female Purple Finches I don't usually see them here, they tend to hang out near water Red-Winged Blackbird Remains This skeleton must have fallen out of a tree after many years. Guessing a hawk?
