MetroTalk On the first Sunday of the month, represented the MdLP as a panel member on the radio show Metro Talk with host Jerry Phillips on WBIG 100.3 FM "Oldies 100" and WTEM AM 980 "Sports Talk 980". The show broadcasted from 7:00 - 9:00 am, but our segment was scheduled at 8:10 - 9:00 am or thereabouts. The following clips from the show are not to be rebroadcasted without permission. They are presented courtesy of the Libertarian Party of Maryland, with permission from Metro Talk. In December 2005, Clear Channel fired Jerry Phillips and cancelled Metro Talk. Show topics: President Bush's political effictiveness; troop removal from Iraq; Afghanistan; and the death penalty. Nick quote: "I really don't care how embarassing it is to the United States if it stops American soldiers from dying for a stupid war -- I don't care about the embarassment -- it's about the soldiers!" -- Listen to the 4 December 2005 show for the rest! Show topics: Virginia Governor's race; Bush's ratings -- Listen to the 6 November 2005 show to hear it! Show topics: D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams declines to run for reelection; Balto. Mayor Martin O'Malley announces candidacy for Maryland Governor; Tim Kaine and Jerry Kilgore running for Virginia Governor -- Listen to the 2 October 2005 show to hear it! Show topic: Hurricane Katrina aftermath -- Listen to the 4 September 2005 show to hear it! Show topics: John Bolton and the United Nations; Iraq and terrorism; Saudi Arabia's role; and Robert Novak. Nick quote: "The American people want their sons and daughters to come home and stop getting blown up in Iraq. That's it." -- Listen to the 7 August 2005 show for the rest! Nick takes on Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and host Jerry Phillips over DC residents' self-defense rights. Other topics: DC voting representation; President Bush's speech; the Iraq timeline; and Supreme Court nominations -- Listen to the 3 July 2005 show for the debate! Nick quote on President Bush's comments: "I have to call the President for probably the most ridiculous statement ever. When asked about the step up in violence since the Iraqi government was installed, his response was: Well obviously they're attacking because they're losing. They're fighting so hard because they're losing!" -- Listen to the 5 June 2005 show for the rest! Nick quote on John Bolton: "I think that John Bolton brings some creative ideas and sort of a viewpoint that's a kind of return to looking at America's interest first when we go to the U.N., but I'm really concerned by some of the allegations that have been made about Mr.Bolton regarding how he deals with people and how he respects other opinions, and I don't think that an ambassadorship is probably the most appropriate place for Mr. Bolton, because you have to be more respectful of other views, and I don't think that that's something that he's shown in the past." -- Listen to the 1 May 2005 show for the rest! Show topics: federal intelligence report; Virginia gubernatorial race; Social Security reform; the passing of the Pope -- Listen to the 3 April 2005 show to hear it! Includes spirited discussion about Cadillac drivers and international oil prices -- Listen to the 6 March 2005 show for the rest! On Virginia Governor Mark Warner: "but just remember this: the Governor can't raise taxes on his own, the Republican General Assembly had to go along with it." -- Listen to the 6 February 2005 show for the rest! Show topics: Tsunami disaster relief; Gov. Ehrlich and medical malpractice legislation; Anthony Williams and D.C. baseball; D.C. representation; Homeland Security Dept. and the TSA. Nick quote: "Homeland Security is being exposed for the feel-good joke that it is. It's not an American thing to have this giant internal security bureaucracy with color codes and people getting up on TV and telling you to buy duct tape, and armies of bureaucrats at the airports making you take your shoes off, and take your belts off, and patting you down and feeling up women -- the TSA is a ridiculous agency that needs to be disbanded tomorrow..." -- Listen to the 2 January 2005 show for the rest! Nick quote: "The resignation of John Ashcroft was the best thing that happened over the last year." (with clapping in the background) -- Listen to the 5 December 2004 show for the rest! Show topic: post-election wrapup. Nick quote: "...but he got about the same amount of votes as Nader, after being outspent four to one." (referring to Michael Badnarik) -- Listen to the 7 November 2004 show for the rest! Show topics: last week's presidential debate; the upcoming vice-presidential debate; Arizona LP's filing for an injuction against public funding of a debate including two of three state recognized parties; baseball returning to Washington, D.C. with public funding of new stadium; and Congress overriding D.C. home rule regarding gun control -- Listen to the 3 October 2004 show for the rest! Notable quote from Nick: "The thing that frustrated me a lot was listening to Bush's speech he's obviously afraid of the Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik because he keeps bringing up quasi-libertarian rhetoric, and within three minutes in that speech he was talking about this litany of expanded federal programs, more areas in which he felt that the government knew how to run your life better than you did, and as Patrice mentioned, he wasn't mentioning how he was going to pay for it" [asked about the Republican national convention] -- Listen to the 5 September 2004 show for the rest! Notable quote from Nick: "Bush and Kerry agree on the war, they agree on the Patriot Act, they agree on gun control. They agree on expanding entitlements, they agree on irresponsible spending -- and so no, to answer Stu's question, I will not vote for a candidate who is essentially the same, and honestly I don't have a preference, they both are awful." [asked by a caller if in the end he will vote for Bush or Kerry] -- also, "Happy Birthday, Michael Badnarik!" -- Listen to the 1 August 2004 show for the rest! Notable quote from Nick: "I'm saying there is competition in gambling, and this is what the governments are afraid of." [on the DC and Maryland slots issue] -- Listen to the 4 July 2004 show for the rest! Notable quote from Nick: "Kerry and Bush agree on the Patriot Act, they agree on the war in Iraq, they agree on the thought that we may actually need a draft, they agree on putting sick people in jail who try to use medical marijuana under state law, they agree on increased government spending, they agree on gun control... so for me, based on those issues, I don't have a choice." [after being told that Libertarians should vote for George Bush] -- Listen to the 6 June 2004 show for the rest! Notable quote from Nick: "The Republicans basically rolled over and showed once again that it doesn't matter whether you're called a Republican or a Democrat when it comes to taxing people -- you're for it." -- Listen to the 2 May 2004 show for the rest! Notable quote from Nick: "Perhaps Patrice [Democratic panel member] can talk about how her party gave our president a blank check to go and fight any war he wanted to in any country he wanted to, and decided to support the Patriot Act without even reading it. Tell me about how it's all partisan politics and how it's all the Republicans' fault... I think that the Democrats could have stopped both the Patriot Act and war in Iraq, if they wanted to, but they didn't. They rolled over for this administration, and they disregarded their duty to uphold the Constitution." -- Listen to the 4 April 2004 show for the rest!
