Libertarian Party of Maryland

1999 Events

January 6 (Wednesday): 8:30 am. Join with us when we turn in more than 13,000 signatures to be verified by the State Administrative Board of Election Laws in order to qualify us as a recognized party until at least 12/31/2002!! We'll start gathering outside the building at about 8:15 am.

SABEL is located at 11 Bladen Street, Annapolis, MD 21401, just a block and a half from the State House, and is very easy to reach. Simply come in the Rowe Blvd exit (Md Route 70) from US 50 and find a place to park near the State House. There are many garages and lots available to choose, and the General Assembly will not be in session at that time, so parking should be fairly easy to find.

An angry vibe charged with political lyrics and tales of misfortune at the hands of the "powers". With danceable beats and intelligent words, a Circle Six show will leave you entertained and charged for the freedom front. And the show is a benefit for the Leukemia Society or something along those lines. Details can be found at http://members.tripod.com/~circlesix/ or http://www.930.com (go to shows).

All Others will turn right into the parking area. You cannot enter the park on Swann Drive because it will be closed for the Festival (and is a one-way street.) "If there are any changes in traffic conditions, please follow signs to Festival."

Parking at Druid Hill Park will be permitted in designated areas only. Parking on the grass is Strictly Prohibited and Will Be Enforced.

Shuttle service will be provided from 11:30AM-7:PM. The shuttles will board at Eager and Charles Sts, in Mt. Vernon. [personally, I'd get there early as there is a parking lot right there which will be filled within a fairly short time!]

How about a tent, some tables and chairs? Support/help, anyone??? If I have nobody/nothing more than some literature and these two stalwart souls with me to help, I'm not going to bother with it at all... let me know PDQ, I've got to file the application and fee by Tues. (tomorrow) afternoon... Contact GMJ.

June 12-13 (Saturday/Sunday): Cumberland 1999 Heritage Days. Want to get a display together with the theme "Celebrating our Heritage of LIBERTY" -- looking for ideas to include! I plan to be in Cumberland for both days, but we'll need some help either or both days.

In 1997, we were kind of on the outskirts of the festival, on the far north end of the exhibits. Now, we're in the thick of things! We're in the cluster of information booths closest to the Washington Street hill where most of the craft exhibitors are!

Our booth number is 314, and it's on the west side of Baltimore Street [now a pedestrian mall] between N. Liberty and N. Mechanic Streets. The area is just south of the entertainment area and the information booth, so we'll have PLENTY of traffic, and "business" should be very brisk. I'm VERY excited about this one!

For those up on Saturday, I want to try to arrange a meeting with some of the locals [including my sister] to see if we can't at least get an LDDS going. Plans are up in the air at this point, but I will be sending post cards out to members and prospects in Allegany inviting them to reply if they're interested and we'll arrange a place, most likely "When Pigs Fly", to meet afterward.

*Today, Washington County; tomorrow, the REST of Western Maryland!*

However you get there, get on I-70 westbound from Frederick. Take I-70 all the way until you get to Hancock, where there will be a left-hand exit for *INTERSTATE 68*. It'll be Exit 1 from I-70.

Follow I-68 westbound till you reach Cumberland. Take Exit 43-C for "Downtown". You'll see the Holiday Inn on your right hand side coming across the bridge. Keep bearing right, it'll put you on Harrison Street [I'm pretty sure that's the name of it.] Go two blocks toward the Holiday Inn and turn left on George Street.

Turn left into the parking garage. By special arrangement, the parking for the entire day is, if it's like previous years, only one FRN... payable in coin on your way out. Walk to the opposite end of the garage from the Holiday Inn and take the stairway out to Union Street. Make a left. Take your first right onto Centre Street.

Go one block to Baltimore Street, turn left. Go down one block and start looking for the LP booth just after you cross Liberty Street. You'll see us on the right-hand side!

I'll be setting up probably around 8:30 - 9:00 AM. You can try my cell phone at 410-608-5648 if any problems, but, just remember, please... I'll be out of my calling area and ON ROAM.

Contact Steve Boone.

June 13 (Sunday): Federal Hill Funfest -- Walk with OUR CANDIDATE (Baltimore City) Lorenzo Gaztañaga. Contact Nancy at 410-833-8991 for more information.

June 16 (Wednesday): My new band "Mad Mother Earth" will be playing at an open mic contest. The location is the Vault Nightclub on Eutaw & Baltimore Streets, Downtown Baltimore. You can get in free by using this free pass -- http://www.noworldorder.net/freepass.html. Just follow the directions on the flyer.

The reason I hope you can attend is that if a number of people show up to support us the club will most likely book us for a weekend night. As many of you know, I like to spread our message, and whenever possible I bring the Libertarians to these shows/events for outreach opportunities, and at club shows I can do this with no charge to the party. You help me so I can help us, that's how it's supposed to work, right? Friends helping friends is the way to go!

Also, we are recording the few songs we'll be doing, so you can help us make some noise! Hope to see some (well, ALL) of you there! Chris Couture.

June 17 (Thursday): 7:00 pm. LDDS, Baltimore City.

June 18 (Friday): 7:00 pm. LDDS, Anne Arundel County.

June 18 (Friday): 10:00 am. MDLP chair Steve Boone's taped interview on WNAV AM-1450 in Annapolis. It's part of a tag-team effort with George Getz from National who will also be given about 15 minutes. Our segments will be separate, but I'll be asked about the LP's local efforts and what we're planning to do in the State, as well as our views on local legislative efforts on guns, taxes, etc.

The interview will be broadcast in the 10 am hour and I'm told probably closer to 10 than 11. I'll make sure to mention the LDDS-Annapolis/AA County meeting for this evening [maybe PieZano's will be overflowing with people demanding to become members!] as well as talk about Lorenzo's campaign in Baltimore City.

June 19 (Saturday): 12:00 to 7:30 pm. Juneteenth Festival at historic Orchard Street Church (a Baltimore stop on the Underground Railroad) -- Lorenzo Gaztañaga (Baltimore City Council candidate) is having a booth. Please come and support him. There will be: National sweet potato pie contest, lectures, demonstrations, hand dancing, childrens' games, Civil War lectures, Underground Railroad tours, and blues singers. The contact is the Juneteenth National Museum... didn't know it existed? Neither did I.

I-83 to Fayette Street....... and close to there. Email me for complete directions. Contact Nancy Millionie at 410-833-8991 for more information.

June 23 (Wednesday): 7:00 pm. LDDS, Montgomery County.

June 24 (Thursday): 7:00 pm. LDDS, Baltimore City.

June 24 (Thursday): 7:00 pm. Congressional Baseball Game at Prince George's County Stadium (home of the Bowie Baysox). This is a Democrat vs. Republican baseball game "to compete in this time-honored battle for political bragging rights." * I've secured a couple of people to hand out some literature and a "Liberty's Best Quotations" leaflet I made from the quotes in the LP NEWS. The game starts at 7pm with the gates opening at 5:30pm (I'll be there when the gates open). Cost of a ticket is $8 and the proceeds go to the Bowie Health Center. If anyone is interested, c'mon out!! If you don't want to attend the game, you can still come out and hand out some literature and show the colors!!. Parking is FREE. Contact Michael Dobak.

July 3 (Saturday): 8:30 am - noon. Walk with the MDLP in the Dundalk Parade!! WE NEED A BIG CROWD!! It starts from Logan Village Shopping Center, on Dundalk Avenue. We'll be carrying the LP banner (probably several); Lauren will be wearing her Miss Liberty outfit; and of course, our City Council candidate, Lorenzo Gaztañaga, will be walking with us, tee-shirts, signs, etc. Lorenzo will be riding in a small float, so bring your children to ride with him! Our journey along the Parade route should take about an hour.

Afterwards, we've been invited to Jackie Madison's house for "sammiches, etc." I'd like to know HOW MANY plan to attend the Parade, and Jackie's. PLEASE RSVP. I think we should each bring "something"... soda, chips... etc. Also...... I have assembled a number of flags to carry, and it would be nice to know if we have enough people to carry the banners and flags. Being an old Dundalk girl myself, I'm looking forward to it. Please let me know if you're coming. It would be great to have a HUGE crowd of Libertarians in this parade, walking and waving. Dundalk's parade is BIG, borders Lorenzo's district, and is one of the best in the Baltimore area. Please plan to join us.

Directions. From Harbor Tunnel - A. I-895... take first exit, "Holabird Avenue - Dundalk". Continue to Dundalk Avenue (it's real soon), and turn right. B. You are now going south on Dundalk Avenue. Go appx 2 1/2 miles and see Logan Village Shopping Center on your left.

Turn right onto Holabird. Go appx 1 1/2 mi to Dundalk Avenue and turn left. B. You are now going south on Dundalk Avenue. Go appx 1 3/4 miles and see Logan Village Shopping Center on your left.

Parking for "our" vehicles will be behind the shopping center. We are the "White Division", "W" Section 2, Position 20. Please try to arrive early, as close to 7:30 as possible. We will meet as a group at the High's, near the Gas Station. (Very handy for that extra cup of coffee!) "Johnny-on-the-spots" will be there for our convenience. We will need to decorate Wyatt's truck. I have ordered 3 banners for Lorenzo, and I have bows and other red white and blue decos. PLEASE BRING A BAG OR TWO OF HARD CANDY. If we have enough people, we can put one person on either sidewalk of the Parade route (but not in the street), wearing a Campaign shirt to pass out literature, and candy to the kiddies. I will have my cooler in the truck with water and Gator Ade, some spray bottles of cold water, etc. Remember that if you get tired, you can always jump in the truck and ride the rest of the way.

Don't forget to bring your bowlwin ball. I'll have mine, just in case!

Contact Nancy Millionie at 410-833-8991 for more information.

July 4 (Sunday): Nation Hemp Festival at the mall in DC. Five of the speakers will be from the Libertarian Party at Lafayette Square in front of the White House were the festival begins. After the speakers give their presentations, a parade goes from the square to the mall at 21st and Constitutional Avenue (where we will have our tent). Additional speakers will be at the second location. This is a good time to talk to a young crowd, many of whom are not yet committed to a political party. Anyone interested in being at our booth to help out, please call Keith Halderman at 301-926-1594 for further details. If you stay until dark, you will be treated to one of the biggest displays of fireworks in the nation! Many people will have the next day off, so take the time to celebrate, and help the LP too.

The formal program will be very brief. There are only three speakers scheduled: Bill Morris, "the Old Libertarian" from Delaware, Bob Sigler from Sussex County, and myself will offer brief remarks about how LDDSes work, with the intent of forming some similar organization or organizations in the affected areas.

These types of groups do wonders for disseminating information, for increasing activity levels, for building camaraderie among local LP members as well as LP wannabes, and for recruiting, because people can come to a public place, "hang out" for a while in a non-threatening atmosphere, and talk, scheme, or just hoist a brewski for Liberty. Contact Steve Boone.

July 16 (Friday): 7:00 pm. LDDS, Anne Arundel County.

July 17 (Saturday): 10:00 am. The Libertarian Club of Baltimore has adopted a 3/4 mile section of Charles Street just south of the Beltway under the MD State Adopt-A-Highway Program. This is an LP publicity / Public Relations project of the Baltimore Area (and some very welcome other) Libertarians. We meet at the Ruxton Center on Charles Street (about one mile South of I-695). If you would like to join us, contact Bill Buzzell.

July 19 (Monday): 6:30. Prince George's Libertarians.

July 19 (Monday): 7:30-10:30. Montgomery County Libertarian Party Social Meeting. Contact Glenn Howard at 301-585-1793 for details and directions.

Montgomery County LP meetings are held once a month, usually on the third Monday at 7:30 pm. The location varies. Each meeting is an informal social event, but the meetings in Feb., April, June, August, October, and December also include a business meeting.

July 21 (Wednesday): 1:00-5:00 pm. The Annual Millard J. Tawes Crab & Clam Bake at Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield, MD. Tickets are $30.00 each.

Now, here's the scoop... many of you said, "Hey, that would be a neat thing to go to, especially for the Party." OK, let's sweeten the deal! For the mere price of $150.00 plus a nominal fee for tables and chairs, we can have the Libertarian Party of Maryland right in the thick of things, with our very own TENT... where we can hand out literature, etc...

This event is one where "anyone who is anyone in politics in Maryland" goes... and the LP should be invading that territory with the Duopoly... it'll shake the hell out of them.... Now that we're recognized, we should be going head to head with them...

So, I'm looking for at least 30 people who are willing to commit to attending, more would be a good and happy thing. We can even try to arrange a bus or a couple of vans that day so that people don't have to drive all that way.

We need about 15 more people to step forward and buy a ticket, (even if you can't go) and THEN we'll be able to have an MDLP tent right in the thick of it! Literature, banners, and ALL! You need a day off from work anyway, don't you? Details as follows: Yes, they will have more than seafood to eat. Yes, some transportation is available. Bear and Nancy will be taking their vans, and Gwen has offered to drive her huge motor home, which is fully self-contained and sleeps 6. Some of us are considering driving back up to Ocean City afterwards to spend the night and possibly the next day in O.C. MD Libertarians hit the Boardwalk! Sounds like fun to me!! :-) Or, since it ends at 5 pm, you can still be back home by 8 or 9 pm.

Make checks payable to: MDLP, indicate in the memo box, "Tawes Crab Feast". This supercedes the payment instructions printed in the June Free? State Libertarian. Mail to: Steve Boone, 17 E Hogarth Circle, Cockeysville, MD 21030. IMPORTANT: if you have already sent checks made out to "Crisfield Area Chamber of Commerce", please make out a new one and resend to Steve. The original one will be voided. Turns out that they need to receive a single payment from the MDLP, and will not accept separate payments. Deadline is June 21. Contact Steve Boone. Well, gang, it worked! We *will* have a tent at the 23rd Annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake in Crisfield. We'll have three tables and 34 chairs, so that some of our visitors may have a chance to sit and chat. This morning, I mailed off a check for $900.00 to cover 30 tickets... if you're NOT among the original folks who sent me a check, and you want to go, then I recommend you buy your tickets--IN ADVANCE--from the Crisfield Area Chamber of Commerce directly. They're limiting the number of tickets to 5,000... and tend to sell out before the event. Their number is: 800-782-3913.

We plan on having a great time. There are paddle boat and horseshoe rentals. A children's playground just a few yards away. Feed the ducks down by the lake. There's plenty of room to toss frisbees and fly kites. Maybe a game of volley ball? And of course, lots of good food. Anyone interested?

This year is going to be a little different. Your $5.00 pays for the picnic food, drinks, and expenses. After the picnic and central committee meeting is over, we're going to open it up to the public for a free drum circle on the park lawn.

Make this a great outreach. Tell all your friends. If you don't have a drum, bring a guitar, fiddle, hoot on old jugs, whatever you have that you want to make music with. Let's have a ragtime jam! Or just come and listen. It will be fun!

The drum circle will be out on the lawn. Bring a chair or a blanket. We'll have speakers during several intermissions.

I need volunteers to help with the food. And if anyone knows a lover of liberty that has a good speech to give, let me know. They can be from other organizations, too.

Anything from backscratchers to Beanie Babies. Don't hesitate to bring several items; the more the merrier. The blind auction is fun, whether you bid a little or bid a lot. Bid a little, and you may end up with a bargain. Bid a lot, and you may get a chance to switch with a lower bidder for what you really want. The proceeds go to the state LP and Montgomery County LP.

Directions: From I-495 Beltway, exit 31 north on Georgia Ave (MD97). Go 3.4 miles north on Georgia Ave. to Layhill Rd. (MD182). There is a traffic signal at Layhill Rd. Bear right (45 degree turn) on Layhill Rd. and proceed north 1.1 miles to Hathaway Drive on left. There is no traffic signal at Hathaway Drive. Turn left on Hathaway Drive. The first house on the right, 150 feet from the intersection, is 13424 Hathaway Drive.

Metro: It is not very convenient to get to the party by Metro, but here is the information about that. The nearest Metro station is Glenmont (Red Line), which is about 500 feet northwest of the intersection of Georgia Ave. and Layhill Rd. It would be about a 20 minute fast walk (one mile) north on Layhill Rd. to Hathaway Dr. There is no bus service north on Layhill Rd. on weekends. Parts of Layhill Road are poorly lit at night; it may be advisable to bring a flashlight if you try to walk that route. You may try calling 301-460-4141 from the Metro station or the 7-11 near the Metro station and ask if someone can drive there to pick you up. The last Metro train leaves the Glenmont station at about 12:30 weekends during the extended hours policy which Metro has put in effect starting in November.

January 15 (Saturday): 3:00-5:00 pm. Howard county organization. The location is yet to be arranged. The time is subject to change depending on space availability, but we're doing an afternoon slot to allow the maximum number of people to participate. [At the end of this post, I've got a list of tasks we need some volunteer help on to pull this off.]

The first party-building social event of 2000 is being scheduled! It's going to be a roll-out of a new concept that we're going to try for the registration drive, and will include snacks, soft drinks or juices, and other munchies. It's OPEN TO ALL, not just Howard County residents and not just LPers.

The majority of the time is reserved for mingling, but there will be a short program to answer the question: "Is there interest in forming a Howard County Libertarian Central Committee?" If the answer to that is "yes", then a short organizational meeting will ensue with those interested. Others may then return to mixing.

Over the next couple of weeks, a mailing will be sent to the following folks:

1) State LP members residing in Howard County 2) National-only members residing in Howard 3) Prospects gathered from the County in the past year.

Our mailing will talk of the Party's having obtained ballot access in the State, our need of getting the 1% to maintain ballot status, and asking them to change their registration to Libertarian if they haven't already done so.

With local elections as well as the 2002 campaigns coming on, we'll be asking people to consider running for various offices, and, if they're interested, to contact us about making such a race.

Most importantly, we will invite them to attend the social event as well as bring their friends and neighbors.

I'm soliciting volunteers to help make phone calls to a dozen or so of our mailer recipients early in the week between Christmas and New Year's and ask if they received the mailer, if they're interested in attending the event, if they've re-registered, etc.

After the responses are back, we'll send post cards advising those who RSVP'd or showed interest when and where the social event will be held and give at least 10 days' notice.

Depending on how this works out, we may adapt this concept to help pump interest into existing counties or even take it on the road to places like: Carroll, Charles, Calvert, Queen Anne's, or elsewhere.

VOLUNTEER HELP WE NEED: 1) Phone solicitors: to call a few numbers and ask some pre-set questions about the mailer. Gauge interest, help us begin and update some volunteer listings. 2) Greeters at the door: to greet people as they come in, make them feel welcome, steer them to the refreshment table(s). 3) Advertising: distribution of fliers to local supermarkets or other stores which allow advertising. A "Community Note" in the Pennyscraper or other local news or shopper's mag. 4) Shoppers: someone to do the shopping for sodas, juices, the munchies, etc., and bring them to the event early. [Yes, you WILL be reimbursed.] 5) Set-up and clean-up: these jobs can be separated, if needed. Depending on where it's held, may be unnecessary.

If you're interested in attending or volunteering to work on this project, please contact me! Thanks. Contact Steve Boone.
