P.O. Box 2343 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Chip Spangler 24 Jan 2002 MARYLAND LIBERTARIANS TO NOMINATE FIRST 2002 GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE The Libertarian Party of Maryland will meet on Sunday, January 27, at 2:00 p.m., in order to nominate Spear Lancaster as the Libertarian Party's candidate for governor of Maryland. The meeting will take place at Montgomery's Grille Restaurant at 7200 Wisconsin Ave. in Bethesda, MD. Although you won't know the official nominees of the Democrats and Republicans until the September primary, you will know the Libertarian candidate. As a non-primary party, the Libertarian Party of Maryland must nominate its candidates at meetings of its Central Committee. The campaign has collected over 15,000 petition signatures in order to get Mr. Lancaster on the ballot in November. The goal is a total of 35,000 to 40,000 signatures to meet the requirement of collecting signatures from one percent of the registered voters in the state. Campaign manager Steve Boone reminds us, "No third party candidate has made it to the ballot for governor since 1966. We want to give the voters a chance to get to know the Libertarian candidate even before the Democrats and Republicans settle on theirs." The Libertarian Party of Maryland is the third largest political party in Maryland. We are dedicated to the reduction of government interference in individual liberty. We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose. |
