1998 Events

Jan 11 (Sunday): The Prince Georges County Libertarian Drinking and Debating Society will be meeting on January 11, 1998, at 7:30 PM at R.J. Bentley's Filling Station at 7323 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD. Come for drinks, snacks or dinner! Suggested Discussion Theme: Student Outreach and PG County Growth. May 9 (Saturday): Spring Meeting of the Libertarian Party of Maryland's Central Committee. Beginning at 10AM, the group will convene in the Parish Hall of St. John's Huntingdon [Episcopal] Church, 3005 Greenmount Avenue in Baltimore City. The agenda includes:

1) Election of delegates to the Libertarian National Convention, to be held July 2-5 in Washington, DC's Convention Center. MD is entitled to 26 delegate votes.

2) Neil McIver will present the report of the Committee to Draft the Abortion Plank, proposed for the National Convention. Discussion is likely to ensue...

3) Lorenzo Gaztanaga will present the report of the Program Committee, which, under separate cover, will forward its proposal to voting members of the Central Committee.

4) A legislative wrap-up.

5) Planning for fair season.

A light lunch buffet is likely to be served, with a minimal cost to attendees who wish to partake so that the meeting may continue. Be there or be talked about... or maybe not even get elected as a delegate...

May 16 (Saturday): Dublin Country Fair -- At Dublin Elementary School on Rt 136 North of Belair, 8:30am to 4:30 pm rain or shine.

June 6 (Saturday): Free Skate & Music Festival. Groovement, a Baltimore band featuring flag-wearing Libertarian Chris Couture on guitar, is hosting a free, all ages music and skating festival at Lansdowne Park on Saturday, June 6 (rain date June 7). The event starts at 11:00 am and runs until about 6:00 pm. The event will include performances by five bands, judged skateboard competition, judged inline skating competition, freestyle skating (all events held in the world-renowned cement skate pool smack in the middle of the park), a vendor village, and tons of sweaty, grooving Baltimoreans.

MDLP can have a booth in the vendor village if some fine Libertarians would be willing to volunteer to work at it. With approximately 3000 flyers being handed out, posters in music stores, skate shops, tattoo shops, alternative clothing stores, etc, Internet exposure, and help from local radio & print media, the band expects between 500-1000 people.

Please contact Steve if you are interested in volunteering to work the booth at this June 6th event.

July 2 (Thursday): Baltimore LDDS

July 11 (Saturday): Groovement is playing a show at The Funnel (corner of Eutaw & Baltimore Streets, near Camden Yards in Baltimore). Two other bands are on the bill, and it is an 18 & over show. We anticipate a big crowd as the club gave out a big stack of VIP passes to help them introduce the new owners.

July 31, August 1 & 2(Friday/Saturday/Sunday): Afram Festival. We're doing a walk-through with Roy Innis of the Congress of Racial Equality and Brian Thomas of WBPS, Boston and Talk America Radio Network, on Saturday, Aug. 1st. Saturday evening, Mr. Innis and Mr. Thomas will be speaking at Baltimore City Community College's Gaare Auditorium at the Liberty Campus, at 6 p.m. A small reception will follow.

August 1 (Saturday): Unity For Action is sponsoring a political forum at the woodstock lounge from 3-6 pm. The lounge is located at 5269 Park Heights Ave., right next to pimlico race track. We would be happy to have any libertarian candidates running for office to come speak at this event. Contact Eric A. Easton VP (410)728-8640.

August 7-9 (Friday/Saturday/Sunday): Worcester County Fair, Snow Hill, MD. Snow Hill is about 1/2 hour outside of Ocean City.

August 9-15: Garret County Fair, Garret County Fairground. Volunteers are needed

August 15 (Saturday): Caroline County Summerfest. Courthouse and surrounding area. Volunteers are needed.

August 15 (Saturday): Ska Fest Plus. An outdoor music festival held at Wilmer's Park in Brandywine, Maryland. There are 20+ bands playing the all day festival, one of which is GROOVEMENT featuring freedom-freak Chris Couture on guitar. All ages, gates open at 10 am and music lasts until 1 am. Plus there's camping.

August 16 (Sunday): Third Annual MDLP Summer Picnic, 10 AM to sundown, Patapsco Valley State Park - Pickall Area. 10-12: Central Committee meeting; 12-sundown: picnic. Cost $10 per adult attending the picnic; children free. Covers food, beverage and entrance to park. If you are attending ONLY the Central Committee Meeting there is no fee. Please RSVP and the $2 park entrance fee will be paid for you. If you don't RSVP you will have to pay $2 at the gate. NOTE: no pets allowed in the park.

Directions: from I-695 take exit 17, Security Blvd. west until it ends. Turn left onto Greengage Rd. and follow it until it ends. Make a right onto Fairbrook Rd., stay on that for 1/4 mile then turn left onto Johnnycake Rd. Follow that for 1 1/2 miles and turn left into the park.

Or from Route 29 North turn right on Route 99. Make a left on Old Frederick Rd. Follow it until it crosses the Patapsco River. Make an immediate right on Johnnycake and then right into the Pickall Area.

We have shelter 706A.

August 21-29: Montgomery County Fair. Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Volunteers are needed.

September 18-26 (Friday-Saturday): Frederick County LP will have a booth at the Great Frederick Fair. Contact Wayne.

October 24-25: MDLP State Convention. Holiday Inn, Glen Burnie

November 7 (Saturday): 7AM til 2 PM: Signature-gathering opportunity. Semi-Annual Flea Market in Four Seasons Sports Complex Hall. It's SOLD OUT - a big crowd is expected. It's in Hampstead [MD Route 30 in Carroll County] 10 miles above Reisterstown. Contact: Nancy (410) 833-8991 for directions.

4:20 PM til whenever: Remembering the War Dead. A demonstration in War Memorial Plaza [across from City Hall in Baltimore City] to remember victims of the War on Drugs. Speakers, open mikes, reading of names of victims, and a memorial service. To add a name to the list [can be civilian or police], call 410-235-7110. LP speakers include: Lorenzo Gaztanaga, Earle Pearce, and Steve Boone.

November 16 (Monday): 7:30-10:00: Montgomery County Libertarian Party Social Meeting. Location is Doris Gordon's home: 13424 Hathaway Drive near the intersection of Layhill Rd. and Hathaway Drive. Call 301-460-4141 for directions.

Montgomery County LP meetings are held once a month, usually on the third Monday at 7:30 pm. The location varies. Each meeting is an informal social event, but the meetings in Feb., April, June, August, October, and December also include a business meeting.

December 12 (Saturday): 6:00-12:00: Montgomery County Libertarian Party Holiday Pot Luck Party and Business Meeting. Location is Doris Gordon's home: 13424 Hathaway Drive near the intersection of Layhill Rd. and Hathaway Drive. Call 301-460-4141 for directions.

December 24 (Thursday): Christmas Eve w' Bea Gaddy-time, etc. Bea's effort for the homeless and needy for this year will NOT be at the 5th Regiment Armory. Instead, she is going to hold it at Dunbar High School. She'll start at about 10 in the morning.

The "Libertarian Club of Baltimore" will be there to pass out our hats, gloves, etc. Several people have expressed an interest in attending. Would you like to join us?

I am proposing that we arrive at about 1 p.m. and stay until 3 or 4 pm. Neighborhood people will be coming and going from the school throughout the day, and Bea will be giving out toys and bags of non-perishable food.

If you can attend, or you have a problem with the proposed timetable, please let me know. If you need directions to Dunbar, I can provide them.
